Lab management software for Indian diagnostic labs

Lab management software, usually called a laboratory information system (LIS), runs a pathology or diagnostic lab from the front desk to the final report: patient registration, barcode accession, analyzer results, reference ranges, pathologist validation, billing and report delivery. PathLab Software is LIS software built for Indian labs, from a single branch to a 10-branch chain.

In short: PathLab Software is lab management software (an LIS) for Indian pathology and diagnostic labs. It covers registration, barcode accession, HL7/ASTM analyzer interfacing, validation with digital signature, GST billing, referrer rate lists and signed WhatsApp reports, hosted in India. Plans cost ₹1,999 to ₹7,999 a month plus GST, billed monthly, with free setup and migration.

What is LIS software, and how is it different from LIMS or HMS?

LIS software is a patient-centred system: every sample belongs to a patient visit, every result has a reference range for that patient's age and sex, and every report needs a pathologist's signature. That is what a pathology lab in India runs on. A LIMS (laboratory information management system) is sample-centred and built for research, pharma, food or environmental labs that test batches, not patients. An HMS (hospital management system) covers wards, pharmacy and billing, and usually includes a lighter lab module.

In everyday Indian usage, "lab management software", "pathology lab software", "diagnostic lab software" and "LIS software" all mean the same thing: the system a lab uses to get from sample to signed report.

What does lab management software do in a pathology lab?

Twelve jobs a lab does every day, and how PathLab Software handles each one. All of them are included in every plan unless marked.

Lab taskWhat PathLab Software does
RegistrationPatient registered with ABHA number, referrer and WhatsApp consent; tests and referrer rates fill in automatically.
Barcode accessionTube labels print at the desk; every step after that is a scan, so samples are tracked from collection to report.
Analyzer resultsSysmex, Erba, Mindray, Horiba and other analyzers send results over HL7, ASTM or serial (Pro and Chain); simulator-tested, validated on site at go-live. See the compatibility matrix.
Result entryKeyboard-first entry with reference ranges by age, sex and pregnancy, units and formulas per test.
Flags and delta checksH, HH, L and A flags; change against the patient's previous result; auto-comments the pathologist controls.
Validation and signatureTechnician enters, pathologist validates; a signed report cannot be issued before validation. See a sample report.
Report deliverySigned report with QR verification sent on WhatsApp to patient and referring doctor, in Tamil or English.
BillingGST invoices, discounts, corporate credit accounts and dues reminders on WhatsApp.
ReferrersRate list per doctor or clinic and an automatic monthly statement, sent through the doctor desk (Pro and Chain).
Home collectionPhlebotomist app with route, geo-tagged time stamp and tube photo as proof of collection (Pro and Chain).
InventoryReagent lots, consumption per test, reorder levels and expiry alerts.
Quality and auditAudit trail and critical-value call logs for NABL assessments; IQC charts are planned.

Which diagnostic labs use PathLab Software?

Standalone pathology labs, one branch

One branch, one or two pathologists, a cell counter and a biochemistry analyzer. Basic (₹1,999) suits manual labs up to 300 patient visits a month; Pro (₹3,999) adds analyzer interfacing, the doctor desk and home collection for up to 1,500 visits a month. A visit is one registration, whatever the number of samples or tests.

Labs with collection centres

Centres register and barcode samples as branches, and the hub processes and reports them. Printed transfer manifests, franchise billing and consolidated cross-branch reports are planned for the Chain plan (₹7,999 a month); ask us for their status.

Small chains of up to 10 branches

One test master, one patient record across branches, an owner dashboard and branch-level users. Each branch can keep its own analyzers.

Hospital labs (an honest note)

If the lab sits inside a hospital that wants wards, pharmacy and lab from one vendor, an HMS with a lab module may fit better. PathLab Software can still serve the lab, but it does not replace a hospital system.

How much does lab management software cost in India?

Lab management software in India costs anything from about ₹417 a month to more than ₹25,000 a month. The difference is mostly in contract terms, onboarding fees and whether analyzer interfacing and WhatsApp delivery are included or sold as higher tiers. Prices below are from vendors' public pages as of October 2026; always check with the vendor before you decide.

What should you check before buying LIS software?

  1. Analyzer interfacing: which of your exact models are supported, bidirectional or result-only, and whether there is a per-machine fee.
  2. Report delivery: does the software send the signed PDF on WhatsApp itself, from your verified number, with a delivery log?
  3. Validation: can a technician's login release a report? It should not be able to.
  4. Audit trail: ask for the trail of one sample from registration to delivery; every step should be there.
  5. Contract: monthly or annual, onboarding fee, and what a price increase at renewal looks like.
  6. Data: where it is hosted (India?), how backups work, and whether you can export everything without asking support.
  7. Language: can reports print in Tamil or your regional language, per patient or per referrer?

How long does it take to move to new lab management software?

With PathLab Software, a single-branch lab typically goes live in two working days. Day one: we load your test master, rate lists and patient list from Excel, Word or your old software, and set your header, signatures and QR. Day two: analyzers are connected over a screen share, staff are trained in Tamil or English, and the first barcode is scanned. The step-by-step version is in our guide on moving a lab from Excel to LIS software.

Lab management software questions

What is the difference between LIS and LIMS software?

An LIS (laboratory information system) is built around patients: registration, tests, reference ranges, validation and reports. A LIMS manages samples and batches for research, pharma or food labs. Indian pathology labs need an LIS; PathLab Software is an LIS with billing, referrers and WhatsApp delivery included.

How much does lab management software cost in India?

Published prices in October 2026 run from about ₹417 a month billed yearly (Labsmart) to ₹8,000–25,000 a month plus onboarding (CrelioHealth). PathLab Software costs ₹1,999, ₹3,999 or ₹7,999 a month plus GST, billed monthly, with free setup and no per-analyzer fee.

Is cloud lab management software safe for patient data?

It can be safer than a single desktop PC, provided the vendor hosts data in India, encrypts it and keeps backups. PathLab Software hosts data on AWS in Mumbai, uses TLS in transit and encryption at rest, keeps encrypted daily backups in India and gives every user their own login with an audit trail.

Can a small lab with 30–50 samples a day use LIS software?

Yes. Small labs gain the most from removing retyping and phone calls. PathLab Software's Basic plan at ₹1,999 a month covers one branch, three users and 300 patient visits a month (about 12 a working day), with barcode accession, GST billing and signed WhatsApp reports included.

Does diagnostic lab software work with radiology?

PathLab Software is built for pathology: haematology, biochemistry, serology, immunoassay, urine and coagulation. Labs that also run X-ray or ultrasound can bill those services in PathLab Software, but image storage and radiology reporting need a separate PACS or RIS.

How long does it take to switch lab management software?

With PathLab Software our target for a single-branch lab is two working days: we load your test master, rate lists and patient list, set up and validate analyzers with known samples and train staff. Multi-branch labs usually take one to two weeks, branch by branch.
