Laboratory information system for Indian pathology labs

Pathology lab software features: every step in one flow

PathLab Software is LIS software and lab management software in one: everything a serious laboratory information system has, plus WhatsApp delivery, a referring-doctor desk and analyzer interfacing included rather than bolted on. Built for single labs, collection centres and chains of up to 10 branches.

In short: PathLab Software is LIS software that covers every step of a pathology lab: registration and barcode accession, analyzer interfacing over HL7, ASTM or serial, result entry with age- and sex-specific ranges, pathologist validation with digital signature, GST billing and signed WhatsApp reports. It adds a referring-doctor WhatsApp desk and critical-value auto-calls with a retry, escalation and acknowledgement log that supports, and never replaces, the lab's own duty to inform the clinician.

Only in PathLab Software

Standout 1

Doctor's WhatsApp desk

Referring doctors get their patients' reports, history across visits and a monthly referred-patient statement on WhatsApp. No portal, no password, no app to install.

Why it wins: Doctors work with labs that are easy to work with. Larger platforms offer referrer portals and apps that need a login, which many busy doctors do not open. Statements list patients and tests; paying doctors for referrals is restricted in India and is not something the product is for.

  • Signed report to the doctor the moment it is validated
  • Reply "history" to get a patient's previous results
  • Monthly referred-patient statement generated automatically

Standout 2

Critical-value auto-call with a proof log

A critical result such as potassium 6.8 or platelets 38,000 triggers an automatic voice call and WhatsApp alert to the referring doctor. Every attempt, failure, escalation and acknowledgement is logged against the result. The call supports, and never replaces, clinical judgement or the lab's duty to inform.

Why it wins: Critical results must reach a clinician quickly, and the lab must show that they did. In the public material we reviewed, most LIS flag the value but leave the calling and the log to staff.

  • Retries about every 10 minutes; failed or unanswered calls are logged
  • Escalates to the lab in-charge (call, WhatsApp, in-app) after two unacknowledged attempts
  • Staff still phone the doctor if the alert stays open; the log is kept with the result

Standout 3

Plain-language report explainer

With the report, the patient gets a short explainer in Tamil or English: which values are higher or lower than the usual range, and to show the report to their doctor. Generated from the validated report; today it is sent as a WhatsApp text, and a spoken voice note is planned.

Why it wins: Fewer confused calls to the front desk, and patients who understand their report come back for the repeat test.

  • Never gives a diagnosis; always points to the doctor
  • Language chosen per patient at registration
  • Switch on or off for the lab in report settings

Standout 4

Repeat-test revenue engine

Test-aware reminders: HbA1c after 90 days, lipids after 6 months, thyroid after 6 weeks on new medicine, each with a one-tap booking link on WhatsApp.

Why it wins: Turns one-time patients into repeat revenue automatically. Generic marketing modules exist elsewhere; intervals that depend on the test are rare.

  • Intervals per test, editable by your pathologist
  • Books a slot or a home collection in one tap
  • Opt-out honoured with one word

Standout 5

Proof-of-collection for home visits

The phlebotomist app records a geo-tagged time stamp, tube photo, temperature note and the optimised route for the day, and the sample goes straight into accession.

Why it wins: Fewer "sample lost" disputes and the evidence corporate and insurance tie-ups ask for. Big chains build this in-house; it is rare in small-lab software.

  • Route planning for the day's pickups
  • Patient gets a WhatsApp update at pickup and at receipt
  • Chain-of-custody shown on the audit trail

Everything a serious pathology lab needs

The baseline, done properly. Every plan includes these.

Patient registration and barcode accession

Register in 20 seconds, print tube barcodes, scan at every step. ABHA number capture at the desk.

Test master, panels and referrer rate lists

Thousands of tests and panels pre-loaded; a separate rate list per referring doctor or corporate.

Result entry with reference ranges by age and sex

Ranges by age band, sex and pregnancy; units and formulas per test; keyboard-first entry.

High/low flags and delta check

H, HH, L and A flags, delta against the patient's previous result, auto-comments you control.

Two-level validation and electronic signature

Technician saves, only a user with validate rights signs; signer, time and a SHA-256 fingerprint are recorded. DSC (PKI) signing is planned.

Branded report with QR verification

Your header, Tamil or English, department-wise formats; print or save as PDF; anyone holding it can scan the QR to check it against the lab's record.

Analyzer interfacing (HL7, ASTM, serial)

Results matched by barcode and mapped to your tests; pipeline simulator-tested, each analyzer validated on site at go-live; bidirectional on request.

GST billing, discounts, credit and dues

GST invoices, referrer discounts, corporate credit accounts, dues reminders on WhatsApp.

Sample tracking and turnaround time

Received, on analyzer, entered, validated, sent: status per sample and average TAT per department.

Reagent inventory with expiry alerts

Lot numbers, consumption per test, reorder levels and expiry alerts on WhatsApp.

Multi-branch and collection centres

Samples collected at a centre (a branch) and processed at the hub; transfer manifests and per-centre headers are planned.

Audit trail and user roles (for NABL assessments)

Who changed what and when on every result; role-based access; a read-only login for assessors.

Frequently asked questions

Can PathLab Software print lab reports in Tamil?

Yes. PathLab Software can show report headers, test names and comments in Tamil, English or both, set per referrer or per patient. The same signed PDF goes on WhatsApp and to the printer, so the patient and the referring doctor see identical reports.

Does it work for a collection centre that has no analyzer?

Yes. In PathLab Software the collection centre is set up as a branch: it registers and barcodes the sample, and the hub lab processes and reports it. Printed transfer manifests and per-centre report headers are planned. This is part of the Chain plan.

What hardware does a lab need to run PathLab Software?

PathLab Software runs in a web browser, so any Windows PC, Mac or Android tablet with internet works. You also need a thermal barcode label printer and, for analyzer interfacing, one Windows PC near the analyzers for the connector we set up with you. We confirm your printer model during setup.

Can the pathologist validate reports from a phone?

Yes. The pathologist can review results, flags and delta checks in PathLab Software from a phone browser and validate with their electronic signature. The signed report goes to the patient and referring doctor on WhatsApp the moment it is validated, even after hours.
