HL7 v2ASTM E1394RS-232 serialBidirectional on request

Analyzer interfacing software: HL7, ASTM, serial. Included, not an add-on.

Analyzer interfacing is the link that lets a lab machine send results straight into lab software. PathLab Software takes results from Sysmex, Erba, Mindray, Horiba, Transasia and other analyzers that output HL7, ASTM or serial text, and matches them to the barcoded sample. We publish exactly what is tested: the result pipeline is simulator-tested, no analyzer has been field-validated with a customer yet, and each one is validated on site at go-live.

In short: PathLab Software takes lab analyzer results over HL7 v2, ASTM E1394 or RS-232 serial and matches them to the barcoded sample. The result pipeline is simulator-tested; no analyzer has been field-validated with a customer yet, so each one is validated on site with known samples at go-live. Interfacing is included in Pro (₹3,999/month) and Chain with no per-analyzer fee.

How interfacing works

One small program on a lab PC, speaking the analyzer's language on one side and PathLab Software's cloud on the other.

1

Set up the connector

We set up the connector on a Windows PC in the lab during onboarding. It authenticates with the analyzer token shown on your Analyzers page and posts signed messages to your workspace.

2

Speak the analyzer's protocol

HL7 v2.x over TCP for modern Sysmex and Mindray; ASTM E1394 over TCP or RS-232 for Erba, Horiba and most biochemistry; plain serial capture for semi-auto units.

3

Match the sample, map the test

The analyzer sends a sample ID and parameter codes. The connector matches the ID to the accessioned barcode and maps codes such as HGB or GLU to your test master, once.

4

Queue, sync, validate

Results are stored locally, posted to the cloud in seconds, and appear in the technician's worklist with H/L flags, delta checks and critical alerts ready for validation.

HL7 or ASTM? Bidirectional or result-only?

H7

HL7 v2 over TCP/IP

The hospital-grade standard. Orders go out as ORM messages and results come back as ORU messages over the lab LAN (PathLab Software: results live, orders on request). Used by Sysmex XN, Mindray BC-5150 and BS-240, Roche cobas, Beckman AU. Fast, structured, and carries flags and units.

A

ASTM E1394 / LIS2-A2

The older lab standard most analyzers still speak, over TCP or a serial cable. Record-based: header, patient, order, result. Used by Erba EM 200, Horiba Micros, Transasia, Agappe and many immunoassay units. Just as reliable when the framing is set correctly.

↔

Bidirectional vs result-only

Bidirectional: the analyzer asks PathLab Software what to run when it reads the barcode, so nobody types a worklist on the machine. Result-only: the analyzer just sends results, which still removes all retyping. Fully automated analyzers support both; 3-part counters are usually result-only.

Analyzer compatibility matrix

Every analyzer we document, with its protocol, direction, the result fields PathLab Software captures today, and an honest testing status. No analyzer has been field-validated with a customer yet; we will update this table, with dates, as each one is.

Simulator-tested

The model is configured in the demo workspace and its result messages run through the same pipeline a live connector uses (Analyzers → Simulate): barcode match, code mapping, ranges, flags, delta check, critical alert.

Validated on site at go-live

Before you rely on interfaced results, we run at least three known samples on your unit and compare every value, unit and flag with the analyzer printout. The record stays in your audit trail.

On request

Protocol is standard but we have not profiled the model yet. Send its LIS manual or a sample output; we confirm a plan within one working day.

Supported analyzer families

Grouped by department, with the brands we see most in Indian labs and how each family is typically connected. Not listed? Almost anything with HL7, ASTM or a text export can be interfaced.

Haematology

Brands: Sysmex XN / XP series, Mindray BC-30 / BC-5150, Horiba ABX Micros, Erba H360, Nihon Kohden, Transasia

3-part and 5-part cell counters send WBC, RBC, HGB, HCT, PLT, differentials and flags as a single record per sample. Modern Sysmex and Mindray models use HL7 or ASTM over TCP and support bidirectional worklists; older 3-part counters are ASTM over RS-232, result-only.

Biochemistry

Brands: Erba EM 200 / XL series, Mindray BS-240 / BS-360, Transasia Erba Chem 7, Beckman AU, Roche cobas c, Agappe Mispa

Fully automated analyzers accept an order list (bidirectional) so the machine runs exactly the tests on the barcode. Semi-auto analyzers push results per test over serial. Dilution factors and rerun results are reconciled against the original sample ID.

Immunoassay and serology

Brands: Mindray CL-900i, Roche cobas e, Abbott Architect, Siemens Immulite, Snibe Maglumi

Hormones, tumour markers and infectious serology arrive with a numeric value and a cut-off interpretation. Map the numeric value and set the reactive/non-reactive cut-off in the test's reference range so the report wording stays consistent.

Electrolytes and blood gas

Brands: Roche 9180, Medica EasyLyte, Erba Lyte, Radiometer ABL

Small benchtop units with RS-232 output. Results are captured from the serial output and paired with the sample; the capture profile is set up per site.

Urine and coagulation

Brands: Sysmex UF / Dirui urine, Stago, Sysmex CA series, Erba ECL

Strip readers and coagulometers send semi-quantitative or timed results. Graded results such as negative, trace or 1+ are stored as text values; INR comes from the coagulometer.

HbA1c and point-of-care

Brands: Bio-Rad D-10, Tosoh G8, Arkray, Erba HbA1c, i-STAT

HPLC HbA1c units send a chromatogram summary plus the final %. PathLab Software records the final %; the chromatogram stays on the analyzer for the pathologist to review.

What interfacing changes in a 150-sample day

Retyping a full CBC by hand takes the better part of a minute per sample, and every typed digit is a chance for a transcription error. At 150 samples a day that adds up to well over an hour of typing, and any error becomes a wrong report, a repeat call and a doctor who trusts the lab a little less. With the analyzer connected, the typing disappears, transcription errors on interfaced results stop, and the technician's time goes to the things that need a human: checking the smear the XN flagged, calling about the haemolysed sample, validating.

Interfacing also makes the NABL audit trail complete. Every interfaced result records which analyzer produced it and when, and every message, matched or unmatched, stays on the analyzer log. That is part of the traceability an ISO 15189 assessor asks about, produced without extra work.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a per-analyzer fee?

No. Analyzer interfacing is included in the Pro and Chain plans for every machine you own, whether that is one 3-part cell counter or six analyzers across departments. Basic does not include interfacing.

What happens to results when the internet drops?

The connector runs on a Windows PC in the lab and is designed to keep receiving from the analyzer, store results locally and send them when the connection returns. Because no analyzer has been field-validated with a customer yet, we test this offline queue on your network during go-live validation before you rely on it.

My analyzer only has a serial (RS-232) port. Does that work?

Usually, yes. Most older cell counters and semi-auto biochemistry analyzers send ASTM or plain text over RS-232. You need a USB-to-serial or serial-to-LAN adapter; we tell you which one and configure baud rate, parity and framing during setup, then validate with known samples.

What does bidirectional mean, and do I need it?

Bidirectional means the analyzer fetches the test order from the LIS when it reads the barcode, then sends results back. It removes worklist entry on the machine. In PathLab Software, results to the LIS are live; order download to the analyzer is available on request and validated per site. Result-only interfacing already removes all retyping.

How long does connecting one analyzer take?

We plan 30 to 90 minutes per analyzer with your service engineer or senior technician: LIS settings, mapping parameter codes to your test master and running at least three known samples, compared value by value with the analyzer printout. These are planning estimates, not measured averages.

My machine is not on the list. Can you still connect it?

Often, yes. If it outputs HL7, ASTM or a text/CSV file it can usually be interfaced, but we only confirm after seeing its LIS manual or a sample output. Send the model and a sample output from the Contact page; we reply within one working day and mark it On request until validated on site.

Has PathLab Software been validated on my analyzer?

Not yet on any analyzer in the field: PathLab Software is a new product. The result pipeline (barcode matching, code mapping, ranges, flags, delta checks, critical alerts) is tested with the built-in simulator, and three models are configured in the demo workspace. Each analyzer is validated on site at go-live with known samples, and the validation record stays in your audit trail.
